GMES and Africa: A glance on MISLAND for decision making on Land degradation

MISLAND stands for Monitoring Integrated System for Land Degradation, has been developed with GMES and Africa funding through a collaborative framework between OSS and LocateIT-Kenya. MISLAND is meant to support decision making by utilizing earth observation data to deliver information, promote awareness and, aid in decision making towards realizing Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN).

This service is deployed in six OSS North Africa action zone countries: Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Mauritania and Tunisia. Through a harmonised kit of indicators for monitoring land degradation, MISLAND presents various components for reporting SDG 15.3.1, Vegetation Gain and Loss, Forest Change, Forest Fires, Mediterranean Desertification and Land Use (MEDALUS), Soil Erosion and Coastal Erosion.

Once operationalised MISLAND Africa service will deliver timely information at regular frequency on land degradation using EO data disseminated through a geo-service/dashboard, a QGIS plugin, mobile application and mapographics. These products will allow the assessment of hot spots, characterize the degradation severity, and trends, and support environmental agencies in development / adaptation of methodologies for the indicators monitoring and evaluation.

For technical experts the tools developed will aid in disseminating information simplified for decision making, and customizable to provide actionable insights and in the end guide policy design/implementation in Africa and monitoring SDGs (especially 15.3.1) for adaptive land management and restoration.

Its extension to the whole Africa is already planned.
