The workshop had as aim to bring together stakeholders and policy makers on the appropriation of Earth Observation in Central Africa.

In the margins of the workshop, a training was organized to train trainees on “Spatial Altimetry and Applications for Monitoring of Surface Water Resources”.

The aim of the training was to strengthen the capacity of researchers and professionals on Spatial Observation Applications for water resources management. More specifically, the training focused on the following objectives:
  • Review the surface water monitoring methods: state of the art and perspectives;
  • Review the current state of satellite observations of surface water and show their potential for use on a regional and continental scale;
  • Understand the processing chain of spatial altimetry data, from downloading to obtaining water level time series from raw high-resolution data, using open access software;
  • Understand the need for field measurements and their interaction with satellite observations through a field visit.

At the end of the training, the trainees from African Union Member states were able to understand the concepts of Earth Observation Applications for monitoring and management of water resources; identify and appropriately use data processing and analysis techniques; identify applications for water resources operational services; and establish a framework of exchange and collaboration.

It should be noted that the International Commission of the Congo-Oubangui-Sangha Basin (CICOS), as one of the GMES & Africa consortia will be responsible to follow-up with government officials, private sectors, partners, academia and stakeholders in Central Africa on the implementation of the outcomes of the workshop.

It should be noted that as GMES & Africa entered its second phase this year, there is need for it to strengthen and further develop infrastructure and capacity for increased exploitation of Earth observation (EO) data in Africa. In addition, GMES & Africa has as aim to improve Africa’s human and institutional capacities in accessing, processing and utilizing earth observation (EO) products and communicate information through the right channels to inform decision making throughout the continent.
