A GMES & Africa and Copernicus Marine Earth Observation Online Training will be organized in October 2020

CSIR is to announced that applications are now open for the GMES & Africa and Copernicus Marine Earth Observation Online Training Course. This training is organised by the MarCoSouth GMES & Africa consortia in collaboration with EUMETSAT. The course will take place entirely online and will run in two different phases between 28 September and 16 October 2020.

This training course is designed to support the development of GMES & Africa activities and Copernicus marine data use around the African continent. It is open to applicants from any African nation who wish to use satellite data for research and/or operational marine applications. Candidates affiliated with any academic, commercial, or governance organisation are encouraged to apply.

Participants will learn the underlying principles of ocean remote sensing, how to access relevant data, and how to work with it using various open source tools. Each participant will be asked to propose a mini project that will be attempted with the support of trainers, allowing them to gain skills directly applicable to their work needs. The online self-taught phase will run from 28 September until 9 October 2020 – this will involve flexible learning through online videos, forums, software installation instructions, documentation and assignments that participants will be able to complete at their own pace. The online classroom phase will take place from the 12th - 16th October 2020. The course will be limited to 15 participants. Selected participants will be expected to complete the self-taught phase and attend the entire duration of the full-time classroom phase of the workshop, which will run between approximately 09:00 to 17:00 (GMT+2).

Applications close on 4 September 2020, and successful applicants will be informed by 14 September 2020.
