GMES and Africa: PMU embarks on monitoring missions across the continent, to examine consortia performance against agreed targets and deliverables

The GMES and Africa Program Management Unit (PMU) has commenced a series of monitoring missions to different regions across the continent, with the objective of strengthening the coordination and support mechanisms at its eight consortia.

The monitoring missions will help align consortia performance with the program’s strategic goals, and provide support to resolve administrative, financial, management and technical challenges encountered in the implementation of projects.

The monitoring exercise will include facilitating and resolving grant administration issues, interacting with and assisting end users and grant recipients, as well as sharing experience and best practices. It will also support strengthening communication between the different levels of program implementation.

The GMES and Africa Program is a pan-African program administered by the African Union Commission. The program is implemented at the regional, national and local levels through funding grants to consortia of institutions including those in the public sector; inter-governmental organizations; non-governmental organizations, the private sector – which is allocated 20% of the funding – training centers, including universities and specialized centers and research outfits. In its two-phase implementation which began in 2017, the program has mobilized more than 160 African institutions in 48 African countries.

The monitoring missions embarked upon by the PMU will examine the performance of consortia against agreed targets and deliverables, as well as identify and resolve problems in grant administration. It is an opportunity to gain deeper knowledge of the project, to understand what needs to be done to strengthen implementation, and take appropriate follow-up actions. The missions are conducted with support from the Technical Assistance Team (TAT).
