Potential Collaborations between G&A and other Initiatives: the Pan African Planetary and Space Science Network (PAPSSN)

The Pan African Planetary and Space Science Network (PAPSSN) is an Academic Mobility project funded by the Intra-Africa Mobility Scheme of the Education Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency of the European Commission (EACEA)

The ongoing Intra-Africa mobility project titled "PAPSSN - Pan African Planetary and Space science Network", involves Addis Ababa University (Ethiopia), Botswana International University of Science and Technology (Botswana), Copperbelt University (Zambia), University of Bologna (Italy), University of Nigeria Nsukka (Nigeria), and University of the Witwatersrand (South Africa). Partners and students are covering projects from astrophysics to Earth Observation and Astrobiology.

PAPSSN just started a new Erasmus+ CBHE project titled "FAST4Future - Focus on Africa Space science and Technology for future development". This project aims at the creation of a virtual (for now) centre of excellence that can deliver high quality content to a broad audience ensuring inclusivity and improving the equality in the Planetary and Space Science education in Africa. They are also looking at the publication of a white paper for the creation of satellites in Africa that deals with all the issues on the ground and that will help African countries and institutions in preparing their own missions. The partnership in this case is composed by: BIUST (Coordinator, Botswana), University of Botswana, Copperbelt University and University of Zambia in Zambia, University of Witwatersrand, the South Africa National Space Agency and Cape Peninsula University of Technology in South Africa, University of Nigeria Nsukka, the Air Force Institute of Technology and National Space Research and Development Agency in Nigeria, as well as European partners from Italy, Università di Bologna, and Sweden, the Kungliga Tekniska Hoegskolan. The project has also an important partner from the growing space industry being AAC SPACE AFRICA (PTY) LTD (AAC), a South Africa- based company pioneering satellite technologies in the continent.

Through the Horizon Europe programme, PSPSSN is also promoting an African Agenda as part of the Europlanet 2024 Research Infrastructure (https://www.europlanet-society.org/europlanet-2024-ri/). Currently Botswana is the only partner but they are preparing a bid for a new Sace Science RI that will include also South Africa (in response of HORIZON-INFRA-2023-SERV-01-02).
