An exciting opportunity for the African EO ecosystem to learn, understand trends and network.

Rational

Despite the vast amount of data available and accessible thanks to digital infrastructures, the full potential of existing information has yet to be realized. Their integration into value-added services for governments, businesses and citizens could be improved.

On the other hand, integrating technological innovations into policy and legislation can be a difficult but necessary task. This requires better regulatory frameworks and ambitious plans such as the Green Deal, the Digital Agenda - at EU level - and the UN's 2030 Agenda.

All these initiatives and many more, such as the Urban Agenda for the EU, common European data spaces, partnerships, etc., were discussed during the two days of EXPANDEO.

EXPANDEO is an excellent opportunity to learn from political experts about current key areas of European policy and how EO can be a crucial tool, to better understand the needs of different sectors, to explore the evolution of the underlying infrastructure, the optimal use of EO and modern ways of raising awareness of key issues using EO, to find new partners.

Some of the discussed topics included
  • How EU policies can improve the use of EO in various sectors. How data spaces built from EO data can improve the effectiveness of decision-making on Earth.
  • The role of partnership in the development of the Earth observation industry.
  • What skills are needed to create a resilient and reliable Earth observation industry.
  • How Earth observation data can help achieve the UN's Sustainable Development Goals.

Day 2 was about the Copernicus Data Space Ecosystem, to get ready for EO data revolution.

Impact for AUC/G&A

A joint AU-EU program, G&A works to bring the African and European EO sectors closer together.  AUC/G&A, and EARSC collaborate on a few activities.

One result of this collaboration is an agreement on the participation of AUC/G&A representatives in EARSC current event:
  • G&A participated in one of the above-mentioned panels, namely "From vision to action - partnerships addressing environmental & social challenges", with ESA and DG INTPA, who are respectively G&A's partner and backer (https://expandeo.earsc.org/agenda-2023/).
  • G&A participated in the jury deliberating on the awards (https://expandeo.earsc.org/awards-2023/). Each year, the EARSC awards recognize the performance of companies and their contribution to the European Earth observation ecosystem. Prizes are awarded in various categories and judged by renowned international experts identified by EARSC. Three finalists are selected in each of the competing categories, and the winner is announced at the ceremony.
