A GMES and Africa lead institution in Eastern Africa, ICPAC provides training for regional institutions and its member states in climate forecasting, early warning, remote sensing, environmental monitoring and information dissemination for sustainable development.

For the phase 2 of GMES & Africa, ICPAC has in its plans a startup incubation program reflecting the model envisaged by the AUC at the continental level. The AUC incubation program which will be designed and implemented jointly with GMES & Africa consortia, is aimed at building the capacities of the private sector in Africa. Most of the trainings will be delivered online. According to the ICPAC management, the Center will deliver general training whilst Makerere University will provide specialized trainings co-delivered with the private sector.

The Digital Learning Platform (DLP) created by the AUC is an important resource that ICPAC seeks also to harness in the GMES & Africa Phase II. In this regard, the Center will also work with Makerere University to review and validate DLP course content and ensure the certification of learners. The DLP has more than 100 courses combined, on the different themes of the GMES & Africa programme including GIS and Remote Sensing. In the first phase of GMES & Africa, consortia had developed customized DLPs and will continue with their improvements and maintenance during the second phase.

For sustainability and continuous development, the ICPAC management has also identified a need for assessing the impact of its trainings. This will be done through post-training surveys and evaluation of training sessions to quantify their contribution to service delivery.
