GMES and Africa Kick off of Projects : RCMRD Phase 2 will be driven by cross fertilization

The need for increased cross-fertilization among GMES & Africa consortia was a central subject of recent discussions between the African Union Commission and the Regional Center for Mapping of Resources for Development (RCMRD). Cross-fertilization of knowledge, ideas and experience is one of the cornerstones intended to drive the implementation of GMES & Africa’s second phase.

Cross-fertilization featured prominently in preparatory dialogue between the AUC and RCMRD, as the stage is being set for the implementation of the second chapter of the Pan-African EO programme.

In the GMES & Africa framework, this will involve the sharing of methodologies and best practices, as well as organizing joint regional workshops and trainings. It will foster thematic communities of practice, to facilitate exchange of knowledge between consortia and with other relevant African stakeholders, in particular the private sector.

To promote the idea of cross-fertilization, the AUC anticipates collaborative agreements between consortia. Those working on similar thematic areas are expected to create consultative working groups and meet at least once each quarter to share knowledge, best practices and lessons learnt. For its part, the AUC will facilitate inter-consortia agreements on a common template and organize technical expert meetings for the development of mutual solutions.

RCMRD is already holding talks on joint trainings with the ICPAC consortium, another G&A supported Consortium, and is expected to forge similar synergies with other consortia and programmes on various methodologies and practices. These include communities of practice on women, academia and research.
