Leaders of the group known as Women in GMES and Africa were part of stakeholders that took part in the GMES and Africa Joint Service Workshop that ended in Dakar, Senegal, on Friday, 25 November 2022. In line with the objectives of the workshop, the group briefed participants on its activities, including its achievements, challenges and plans for the future. Women in GMES and Africa members work through sensitization, awareness creation and capacity building in executing the group’s mandate. They also use communications and networking tools to galvanize and engage with their audiences. So far, they have tracked and documented the involvement of women in GMES and Africa and supported in harnessing opportunities for mainstreaming gender in earth observation activities in Africa.

Africa has a network database of 117 members from across the continent as well as Africans living abroad. The membership represents a diverse spectrum of professionals including scientists, researchers, university professors, engineers and communication experts. The group is working to fill gaps in its operations which is yet to cover all the pillars and strategic objectives of GMES and Africa. It is tapping into support and contributions of stakeholders, to promote and drive its agenda. For the medium term, it is planning to publish on women role models in the continent, create more channels of interaction for members and link them to training and other opportunities.
